GusGus

GusGus is by far my favorite nightspot in the Zona Dorada in Mazatlan. Pronounced as "goose goose", it comes from Gustavo, the name of both the owner and his son. It is located about half-way between El Cid and Dairy Queen, on the other side of Camino Sabalo from the beach.

You'll find here some of the best food and drinks in Mazatlan at very reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and courteous, the service expedient and professional. Best of all they maintain a limitless stock of Herradura Reposado, my tequila of choice.

Jorge the bartender is what really brings me back to GusGus again and again. A professional in the truest sense, he mixes a mean drink, jokes with me in the good times, and has listened patiently more than once while I cried into my tequila. You can leave for 10 years, he'll remember your name and your drink. When you get home again, you'll brag about your favorite bar to all your friends. No kidding, this guy is the best bartender in town.

The house band is Camilion and is famous throughout Mazatlan for its unique blend of rock and roll, Norte-Americano y Mexicano tambien. Be sure to listen for their version of Corizon Espinado. This song is the classic rock-love ballad aqui en Mexico. These guys put a special touch on the song that you really can't leave Mazatlan without hearing.

Between sets, and in the afternoon before the band starts, you'll find mariachis, guitarists and singers, and indigenous music. The music is traditional and heart-warming, a perfect complement to a perfect meal or margarita.
